Emerald is beryl coloured green by chromium. Almost every natural emerald carries tiny inclusions — the trade calls them jardin, the garden — and they are the mark of a real stone. At 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale it resists scratches, but those inclusions make it brittle, so take the pin out before anything that might knock it.
